So many dreams involve departure, absence or exile, as there are many poems or works of music dedicated to absent friends or lovers. Departure is surrounded by a particular atmosphere of railway stations, trains, and the ocean that separates people. Even luggage is part of the atmosphere, designed as it is for temporary or permanent separations. To dream of a person going away generally indicates that we cease to be "bound" to that individual, that he or she is leaving our inner life or that we are detaching ourselves from that person. We also find in dreams of departure that fear of being abandoned by the person who is going away. It is the theme of human loneliness. In other dreams, seeing yourself departing can mean that you would like to leave something or someone. This is then a dream involving unconscious desires.

Superstition-based dream interpretations say that if you dream about someone's departure, you will receive a visit from someone you haven't seen in a long time.
