It appears there is a new technology that should be available within the next 7 years that will allow us unlimited energy from water, harnessing the power of the sun. Scientists in Australia’s University of New South Wales say, ‘It would be the cheapest, cleanest and most abundant energy source ever developed; the main by-products would be oxygen and water.’
Special titanium oxide ceramics will harvest sunlight and split water molecules to create hydrogen fuel; they say it will be a simple process to make a device with no moving parts to harvest the energy; giving off no greenhouse gases or pollutants. Professors Janusz Nowotny and Chris Sorrell are leading a solar hydrogen research project at the University’s Centre for Materials and Energy Conversion and are said to be most advanced in developing cheap, light-sensitive materials that will be the basis of the new technology.
Professor Sorrell says, ‘We’ve abundant sunlight and huge reserves of titanium. But this technology could be used anywhere in the world. It’s been a dream of many people for a long time to develop it and it’s exciting to know it is now within such close reach.’
Hydrogen fuel cell technology already exists and is cheaper, more efficient with lower pollution problems than the internal combustion engine; but we still use fossil fuels to produce the hydrogen, which results in the dreaded greenhouse gasses. This new technology would eliminate that factor.
