It seems fairly straight forward and obvious to me. If you fell in love with this girl, lost her(lost dog...lost love, lost companionship, missed out), and you are symbolicly hoping that she will come back, as her note came back with the dog. It wasn't about the dog at all, you just feel more comfortable with your love of the dog than your love of the girl.
