Lucid Dreamers and the Stroop Test
The Stroop Test is a test of how good someone is at paying attention to two different things at the same time.
In the Stroop Test, you are given a list of the names of colors, but the names are written in ink that is different from the colors that are named.
For example:
Orange
Red
Blue
Pink
You are supposed to say the names of the colors that are written down, not the colors of the ink.
So for example, for the first color, you would say "orange" not "blue", because the word that is written down is "orange", even though it is written in blue ink. Some people find this quite difficult.
There was a recent study reported in the journal Dreaming, published by the American Pyschological Association, which showed that people who who have lucid dreams more than once a month are much better at the Stroop test than people who have fewer lucid dreams or who don't have lucid dreams at all.
The researchers who performed the study think this is because when someone lucid dreams, they have to constantly divide their attention between the dreaming world and the waking world, so they are very good at paying attention to two different things at once.
