My sister and I went to see An Inconvenient Truth last night. For those of you who havent' seen it yet, get thee to the nearest independent theater, buy a ticket, and plunk your butt down on a seat and observe.

The film is lecture with graphics with some of Al Gore's (former U.S. Vice-President and contender for the presidency in 2000) personal observations about his life experiences. He even touches upon the 2000 election, but only a bit. He offers a glimpse into his thoughts at the time.

During the presentations, we see how the industrial revolution gave way to the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and how it coincides with the rise in temperatures. As more of the ice caps melt, mainly the poles, the more water there is. The more water there is that gets heated up, the more this causes the bottom ice and remaining caps to melt into the oceans and lakes, causing more heat to be generated...

This causes an unbalanced eco-system. Gore talks about how pineworms destroy trees, leaving less habitat for the birds. The birds don't come around, which causes more pineworms. What started this was that spring is coming sooner and sooner. The leaves come much sooner, causing the worms to start eating sooner. The birds havent' quite caught up with this change yet.

The most interesting thing for me was how our machineary and modern technology has partly been responsible for these changes. Not just in carbon dioxide pollutants, but in how we irrigate the lands. The bigger the equipment, the bigger the holes and ditches, the more water that runs off, causing lakes to eventially dry up or sink into the ground.

Gore also mentions how the ice that scientists have dug from the ice caps is much darker or polluted just in the years since the Bush administration inacted the "Clear Skies Inititive."
