Hello Solace1983,
It's quite common for other people in dreams, whether you know them or not, to represent different aspects of yourself. It could be different parts of you trying to communicate with you, which sounds a bit odd but it really isn't in dreams.
When you are awake you'd just hear yourself think in a few different voices, telling yourself what to do as you live through each day. In dreams the same things happen, but to make the voices have more substance, and sometimes to get you to listen to them (which we often do not when awake), your mind will give them a proper presense like a real person.
You can sometimes figure out what your dream/subconscious is trying to tell you by looking carefully at what the people were doing and saying, or what feelings they evoked in you.
Sometimes your mind uses images of people you know, or knew, or know of (like a celebrity/movie star) because it connects certain feelings and emotions with the way you think of these people in waking life.
