That was very informative.
One thing that is very important is that the child get a proper diagnosis of ADHD before being given Ritalin. That is because the symptoms of ADHD can be very similar to the symptoms of bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder. If a child with bipolar disorder is given Ritalin, it will have a very bad effect on him. If he is in a manic state, it will make the mania worse, because it acts as a stimulant, so that the child could even become psychotic, completely delusional and unable to function at all. If the child is in a depressed state, the Ritalin will give him energy and the ability to focus and plan, so that he is likely to go from thinking about possibly killing himself to actually going ahead and trying to commit suicide, and sometimes succeeding. Newspapers and magazines sometimes report about cases of kids being prescribed Ritalin and then killing themselves. In these cases, the Ritalin is often blamed for being a bad drug, when in fact, the fault lies with the person who prescribed Ritalin to someone who did not have ADHD, but another condition that was not treated properly.
