Speedy is on the dream path to enlightenment
Default New here, dream questions

Suprisingly, I was looking for a Harry Potter emoticon, and stumbled at this forum. I had always been intrigued with my dreams, and I think registering here was a good idea to find out.

I am 19 years old, and ever since I was about 10 years old, I have had disturbingly realistic dreams. I dont mean disturbing as in horrific, or scary, but the level of detail is insane. I could wake up and draw blueprints of where I had been in my sleep, and I actually have on some occasions.

It would take too long to explain the dreams I have had, but I was just curious, maybe I am a very deep REM sleeper or something? I always hear people who say "I dont remember the dream I had last night", or others that say "I dont dream". (I heard that everyone has dreams, even if they think they dont, they just dont remember them, is this true?). I have never experienced a lost dream.

The few times that I do have a "Scary" or "horrific" dream, I wake up feeling extremely disturbed from the realism. Everything doesnt seem right, the "mood" in my room, the lighting, everything feels wrong, and I have to re-adjust. It's like having 2 lamps in your room. When the bulb dies on the lamp in the left side of your room, and you use only the right, it feels wierd. (Untill you replace the old one). Just an odd feeling. Everything feels different and I feel un-connected.

I just wanted some input, anything helps, and I really like this forum, very interesting, glad I found it.

Now on another note, I have had some mini-dreams that i get before falling asleep which scare me and I'll jump in my bed lol. I dont get them anymore, but was curious. In this short little clip of a dream, I am playing basketball, and somwone passes me the ball very fast and it hits me in th head then I wake up and jump like it scared me. I dont play basketball, and I dont watch it, I find it odd. (Glad I dont have it anymore though)

Thanks for your time!

EDIT: Also, I am a graphic designer, and have a very keen eye. I always have, ever since I was little. I am very open to many possibilities of anything. I have the ability to multi-task with many things at once. Could this explain my vivid dreams?

Welcome to the forum!

I often have those mini dreams before deep sleep. In those dreams, I'm either falling off a cliff or I'm getting out of the way of something. When I hit bottom or get hit by the thing, I jolt awake with a jerking motion of my legs. This is a natural occurance and it has a name, but I dont' remember it. That mini sleep before sleep is called the hypnogogic state.

I do think your vivid dreams is related to your artistic talent. Having such dreams is probably just natural for you. Enjoy them!

Wierd, after I posted this, last night I had the same mini dream. I actually turn to look at the ball being passed to me but I turn too late and i see the ball smack me in the face and I wake & jolt in the bed for a split second like it scared me.

These experiences are called Sleep Starts.

http://www.sleepeducation.com/Disorder.aspx?id=17

They are normally nothing to worry about.

I did some research on them after a bad experience with them a few weeks ago, due to stress after the recent death of my father.

Every time I started to fall asleep, my body would jerk and I would let out a scream, even though there was nothing frightening me or upsetting me to scream about. I went for two nights without any sleep because of this.

I saw the doctor who said that it was just a reaction to my father's death.

So if sleep starts are bothering you, the best thing to do is probably work on reducing stress.
