I know what you mean, and I knew all this would happen as soon as I saw those planes crash into the towers. I was living with this guy called Darryl at the time and I told him he had no idea how far reacing the effects would be (he made some dumb quip about Americans deserving it), and that it would be particularly bad for Islamic people if it turned out to be a terror attack in the name of Islam, which it did. It's not just the wars it's caused, it's all the paranoid feelings created about anyone "different" and the trash media fuelling the feelings, and the trash governments responding to the public fears - it's all a viscious circle.
I always used to say when I was younger that we need a good scary alien invasion from another world to bring us all together. I'm not so sure about that now, I think some people are just nuts and would want to blow each other up anyway, regardless of the Temporal Lobe Slurpers from beyond infinity coming to conquer our planet.
Still, I don't think it's ever quite so bad as we think, not on a personal level unless you have family directly involved. If you never watched the news on TV or read any newspapers there might not be that much difference with your day-to-day life.
